Lisa Bailey, Monique Thorne, Debra Noland, Abdullah Khan Zada, Florence M Ford, George Psevdos

TL;DR
This paper reports an outbreak of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in a nursing home for elderly veterans and describes the infection control measures taken to contain it.
Contribution
The study provides a detailed account of an hMPV outbreak in a secure geriatric mental health residential unit and highlights effective infection control strategies.
Findings
Eight residents in a 30-bed nursing home tested positive for hMPV between February 24 and March 6, 2025.
Infection control measures such as halting admissions and communal dining helped contain the outbreak.
Case 1 is hypothesized to have been infected by his wife, who had recent symptoms of respiratory illness.
Abstract
Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is an enveloped single-stranded RNA virus which can cause acute respiratory tract infections in young, older, and immunocompromised patients. We report a cluster of respiratory illnesses due to hMPV in a Veterans’ Affairs affiliated secure geriatric mental health residential unit.Table,Cases of human metapneumovirusOutline of cases in the nursing home Cases of human metapneumovirus Outline of cases in the nursing home A retrospective analysis of an outbreak of hMPV in a 30-bed secure geriatric mental health residential unit in February-March 2025. Cases were confirmed via nasopharyngeal respiratory real-time multiplex PCR panel. Case definition included a resident with new onset respiratory complaints and positive PCR test. Clinical presentation, laboratory data and outcome were reviewed in each case. The unit houses 25 residents in 17 rooms (single and…
