TL;DR
This initiative used community spaces to improve Black women's sexual health knowledge and HIV prevention access by addressing barriers and fostering trust.
Contribution
The study introduces a culturally tailored, community-based model for HIV prevention education and service linkage among Black women.
Findings
Community sessions increased attendees' knowledge of PrEP eligibility and confidence in advocating for their sexual health.
56% of attendees reported HIV testing within 3 weeks, and 80% discussed prevention with healthcare providers.
Trusted spaces like Black-owned businesses and churches facilitated sustained engagement and dispelled myths about PrEP.
Abstract
Black women face a disproportionate burden of HIV diagnoses and unique barriers to sexual health services. This project aimed to enhance their sexual health literacy and linkage to HIV prevention services.Table 1.Attendee Demographics from Community Education Sessions Held in Black-Owned Businesses (Hair Salon and Juice Bar) and ChurchesFigure.Discordant Barriers and Facilitators to HIV Testing, Care, and Prevention as Perceived by Attendees and Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) Attendee Demographics from Community Education Sessions Held in Black-Owned Businesses (Hair Salon and Juice Bar) and Churches Discordant Barriers and Facilitators to HIV Testing, Care, and Prevention as Perceived by Attendees and Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) In 2024, local healthcare professionals (HCPs) led 5 sexual health and HIV prevention sessions in Black-owned businesses (GA, TX) and churches (NY, NC)…
