TL;DR
This study found that getting COVID-19 in the third trimester of pregnancy increases the risk of severe illness for the mother, but not consistently for poor fetal outcomes.
Contribution
The study provides new evidence that the trimester of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy affects maternal severity of illness but not consistently fetal outcomes.
Findings
Third-trimester infection was linked to higher odds of ICU admission and mechanical ventilation.
Infection during any trimester was not associated with increased fetal loss, preterm birth, or low birthweight.
Second-trimester infection was associated with lower odds of preterm birth and low birthweight.
Abstract
The impact of COVID-19 on pregnancy outcomes remains controversial, with studies reporting conflicting results. Limited data exist on whether the timing of infection explains these discrepancies. The aim of this study is to determine whether COVID-19 infection acquired during different trimesters in pregnancy was associated with varying severity of illness and pregnancy outcomes.Characteristics of Pregnant Women by Trimesters of PregnancyN, Number; IQR, Inter Quartile Range; WHO, World Health Organization, APGAR score: Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity and RespirationThe association of COVID-19 infection during pregnancy and the risk of severity of illness and pregnancy outcomes, by trimester of COVID-19 infection.
