Home Health Access among Persons with Dementia: Traditional Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage
Chenjuan Ma

TL;DR
Persons with dementia are more likely to access home health care directly from the community rather than after hospitalization, and Medicare Advantage beneficiaries with dementia are less likely to use this community-based access.
Contribution
This study reveals disparities in home health access for persons with dementia based on Medicare type and emphasizes the need for policy monitoring.
Findings
Persons with dementia are more likely to enter home health care directly from the community (adjusted OR = 1.52).
Medicare Advantage beneficiaries with dementia are less likely to use community-entry home health care (adjusted OR = 0.93).
Community-entry home health care is more common among traditional Medicare beneficiaries with dementia.

Multivariate logistic regression was used in the analysis, adjusted for patient sociodemographic and clinical conditions, and considering clustering within each agency. Of the 3,174,874 home health episodes in 2019, 42% were community-entry HHC, 22% were from persons with dementia, and 35% were from MA…
