TL;DR
Using mesh during emergency hernia surgery reduces long-term recurrence and does not increase complications, suggesting it could improve patient outcomes.
Contribution
This study provides new evidence that mesh use in emergency hernia repair lowers recurrence rates without increasing explantation risks.
Findings
Mesh use was associated with a 13.0% 10-year recurrence rate, compared to 18.9% without mesh.
Mesh explantation rates were not significantly different between repairs with and without enterectomy.
The 10-year reoperation rate for recurrence after emergency hernia repair was 16.3% overall.
Abstract
How is mesh use associated with the long-term reoperation rate for recurrence after emergency open ventral hernia repair? In this cross-sectional study of 122 651 adults, the 10-year reoperation rate for recurrence after emergency ventral hernia repair was 16.3%. Among emergent open repairs, those repaired with mesh had significantly lower 10-year recurrence rates than those repaired without mesh (13.0% vs 18.9%). The findings of this study suggest that mesh use was associated with lower long-term reoperation for recurrence after emergent open ventral hernia repair, which may improve long-term outcomes in this setting. This cross-sectional study assesses the long-term reoperation rate for recurrence after emergent ventral hernia repair with or without mesh use. Wide variation exists in how surgeons approach the repair of emergent presentation of ventral hernias, with many opting to…
