Comparative analysis of optical properties in amniotic membrane products
Bryanna J. Lee, Jeffrey Tsao, Natalie A. Afshari

TL;DR
This paper compares the optical clarity of different amniotic membrane products using a photographic method to assess their impact on vision.
Contribution
A modified photographic-based method is introduced for quantifying optical properties of amniotic membranes.
Findings
Blur Index (BI) ranged from 0.97% to 22.58% across different amniotic membranes.
Transparency Ratio (TR) values ranged from 0.906 to 1.018 with an inverse correlation to BI.
Thicker membranes generally showed higher BI values, indicating more blurring.
Abstract
Compare optical properties of amniotic membranes (AM) using a modified photographic-based method. Optical measures of various AMs (Prokera® Plus, Prokera® Slim, Amniograft®, Ambio2®, Ambio5®) and a Collagen Shield were quantified by examining standardized band pattern images through the AMs. Blur Index (BI) was calculated by comparing standard deviations of gray values, while transparency ratio (TR) was determined by comparing mean peak gray values of white bars viewed through the AMs. BIs ranged from 0.97% (Ambio2®) to 22.58% (Ambio5®), with 0% signifying minimal blurring. TRs ranged between 0.906 to 1.018, with greater values signifying more brightness. BI and TR showed an inverse correlation (r = − 0.954, 95% CI − 0.984, − 0.871). Thicker AMs generally demonstrated higher BIs. Cross-linking effects were unpredictable. TR inversely correlated with BI and thicker AMs generally…
