Xin Yin, Jiaxi Yang, Dong Daniel Wang, Frank B. Hu, Walter C. Willett, Cuilin Zhang

TL;DR
Following the Planetary Health Diet may reduce heart attack risk and help manage weight in women with a history of gestational diabetes.
Contribution
This study is the first to show that the Planetary Health Diet is linked to lower myocardial infarction risk and better weight control in women with gestational diabetes history.
Findings
Higher adherence to the Planetary Health Diet was associated with a 63% lower risk of myocardial infarction.
Decreasing adherence to the diet correlated with increased weight gain over four years.
BMI mediated most of the association between the diet and type 2 diabetes risk.
Abstract
Is adherence to the new Planetary Health Diet (PHD) pattern associated with lower risks of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women with a history of gestational diabetes (GD)? In this cohort study of 4633 women with a history of GD, greater adherence to the PHD was associated with a lower risk of myocardial infarction, while associations with overall CVD and T2D were inverse but largely mediated by body mass index. Additionally, decreasing adherence to the PHD was associated with greater weight gain. These findings suggest that the PHD pattern may play an important role in improving cardiometabolic health and supporting weight management in women with a history of GD. This cohort study investigates the associations between adherence to the Planetary Health Diet and major cardiometabolic outcomes, including the development of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular…
