TL;DR
This study finds that opioid use increases health care costs and usage among older home care recipients, especially those without dementia.
Contribution
The study is the first to examine opioid-related health care utilization in home care recipients with and without dementia using nationwide data.
Findings
Opioid initiation was linked to increased inpatient days and emergency care admissions.
Home care service use decreased in dementia patients but increased in non-dementia patients after opioid use.
Health care costs rose by 21% in the year following opioid initiation.
