Abstract
Hypertension continues to be one of the most important avoidable risk factors for cardiovascular disease and early death. Many patients, especially in primary care settings, continue to have inadequate blood pressure control despite the availability of effective pharmaceutical medications. Fundamental tactics for avoiding and treating hypertension include dietary adjustments, greater physical activity, weight control, lowering salt intake, and quitting smoking. To evaluate the effectiveness of lifestyle counseling delivered by family physicians in primary care settings on the management of hypertension, a comprehensive search of four databases led to the discovery of 466 relevant publications.
