TL;DR
A study in Venezuela found a rise in caterpillar-related accidents, mainly involving children, with skin and systemic symptoms.
Contribution
This is the first report of lepidopterism caused by Dirphia caterpillars in Venezuela.
Findings
32 caterpillar sightings and 13 accidents were recorded in Valle de Caracas from August to September 2023.
Most accidents involved children under nine and occurred in residential gardens and parks.
Skin lesions were common, and six patients showed systemic symptoms like fever and palpitations.
Abstract
Lepidopterism, a condition resulting from accidents by caterpillars or the adult forms of moths and butterflies, typically manifests as mild and self-limited hypersensitivity reactions.
