TL;DR
This study shows that a specific type of hip replacement surgery in cats has good results and high owner satisfaction with few complications.
Contribution
The study introduces hybrid THR in cats using a cemented femoral stem and cementless acetabular cup as a feasible and effective surgical option.
Findings
Hybrid THR in cats had no intra- or postoperative complications.
Owner-reported satisfaction was excellent with a mean sf-FMPI score of 2/36.
Hybrid THR was successfully used as a revision strategy for recurrent hip luxation.
Abstract
To describe the surgical technique, complications and outcome of hybrid total hip replacement (THR) in cats using a BioMedtrix cemented femoral stem and cementless acetabular cup. A retrospective case series. Cats undergoing hybrid THR between 2020 and 2023. The present study was a retrospective review of medical records. Postoperative radiographs were reviewed and implant positioning measured. Owner‐reported follow‐up was obtained via questionnaire utilizing the short‐form feline musculoskeletal pain index (sf‐FMPI). A total of 17 hybrid THRs were performed with two cats undergoing bilateral THR. A 12 mm BioMedtrix micro BFX acetabular cup was placed in all cats in combination with a CFX femoral stem. Follow up imaging demonstrated no change in implant position. No intra‐ or postoperative complications were reported. Hybrid THR was successfully performed in one case as a revision…
