TL;DR
Displaced Lebanese women in Syria have low awareness and screening rates for breast and cervical cancer, highlighting urgent health care needs in crisis settings.
Contribution
This study identifies significant knowledge and screening gaps for breast and cervical cancer among displaced Lebanese women in Syria.
Findings
Most displaced Lebanese women in Syria lack awareness of breast and cervical cancer symptoms and risk factors.
Higher education correlates with better cancer knowledge and screening rates among displaced women.
Only a small percentage of participants had ever undergone cancer screening procedures like mammograms or Pap tests.
Abstract
What are the barriers to breast and cervical cancer screening among displaced Lebanese women in Syria? In this cross-sectional study of 378 women, the majority of participants lacked awareness of breast and cervical cancer symptoms and signs, with low numbers ever having undergone screening. Higher educational attainment was associated with improved cancer knowledge and screening rates. These findings suggest that targeted interventions are urgently needed to overcome cancer screening barriers in humanitarian crisis settings. This cross-sectional study evaluates knowledge of breast and cervical cancer risk factors and symptoms and screening for early cancer detection among displaced Lebanese women in Syria. Breast and cervical cancers are leading causes of cancer mortality in low-resource countries, yet awareness remains critically understudied among displaced populations in…
