Frances Hardin-Fanning, Ratchneewan Ross, Shuying Sha

TL;DR
This study explores how factors like age and self-reliance influence stigma around food assistance, which can prevent people from seeking help.
Contribution
The study identifies specific demographic and psychological predictors of food assistance stigma using a large online sample.
Findings
Older age, being male, and higher self-reliance are significant predictors of food assistance stigma.
Self-reliance expectations contribute to stigma, which may hinder efforts to reduce food insecurity.
Stigma is widespread in the U.S., and targeted interventions are needed for older and self-reliant males.
