TL;DR
This paper reviews the link between bipolar disorder and substance abuse, focusing on diagnosis challenges and treatment strategies for dual diagnosis.
Contribution
The paper provides a comprehensive review of factors and treatment approaches for the co-occurrence of bipolar disorder and substance use disorder.
Findings
Bipolar disorder and substance use disorder together lead to worse outcomes, including higher suicide rates and health problems.
Genetic, neurobiological, and psychosocial factors contribute to the association between the two disorders.
Integrated care models and tailored treatments are emphasized for managing dual diagnosis effectively.
Abstract
Bipolar disorder (BD) and substance use disorder (SUD) usually arise in conjunction, leading to worse outcomes than when either condition exists independently. This research paper provides a comprehensive overview of the high rates of SUD among people with BD. It explores certain determinant factors such as genetic polymorphism, neurobiological implications, and psychosocial and environmental factors that contribute to this association. It also discusses the challenges in diagnosing both conditions, given their overlapping symptomatology, and the importance of…
