Genetic Testing in Psychiatry for Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities: An Audit of Current Practice
Megan Viegas, Sonya Rudra

TL;DR
This audit found that genetic testing is underutilized in psychiatric care for individuals with intellectual disabilities, despite its potential to improve treatment and outcomes.
Contribution
The study identifies a gap in genetic testing referrals within Community Learning Disability psychiatry services and proposes actionable steps to address it.
Findings
Only 25.6% of patients with moderate or severe ID had genetic testing mentioned in their records.
Just one patient was referred for genetic testing by the Community Learning Disability team.
Confirmed genetic diagnoses were found in 20.5% of patients, including Trisomy 21 and Costello syndrome.

Methods: A retrospective audit was conducted in a Community Learning Disability Community based in London. The electronic health records for all patients under the psychiatry caseload as of November 2024 were reviewed. Data extraction focused on the ID severity, details of genetic diagnoses and mention of…
