Enhancing Blood Collection Processes: A Phlebotomy Clinic Improvement Project
Joshua Wilkinson, Anna Sherratt, Eleanor Davies

TL;DR
This study aimed to improve blood test processes in a mental health service by reducing delays and enhancing patient safety through an in-house phlebotomy clinic.
Contribution
The study introduces an in-house phlebotomy clinic to streamline blood test processes in a CAMHS Eating Disorder Service.
Findings
The time between blood tests being taken and results reviewed decreased from 17 to 2 days.
No significant improvement was observed in the time between test requests and sample collection.
The in-house clinic is expected to further improve all steps of the blood test process.

Blood tests being requested and blood results being reviewed. This baseline data has been displayed in a statistical process chart to show the current length of time taken for each of the above. The baseline data also shows which patients had abnormal blood results that required A&E attendance for urgent repeat testing. It also reviews the near misses that occur due to the length of…
