Ranjan Baruah, Shazlina Shahul, Mahmoud Odeh

TL;DR
This study aimed to improve male patients' awareness of the risks of valproate use around conception by using text messages and follow-up phone calls.
Contribution
A novel quality improvement approach combining automated messaging and follow-up calls to address patient awareness of valproate-related family planning risks.
Findings
Only 8 out of 22 patients received and acknowledged the initial text message.
Follow-up phone calls successfully informed 13 previously unaware patients about the MHRA guidance.
4 patients could not be reached despite repeated attempts, highlighting engagement challenges.

Aims: A recent MHRA alert highlighted a possible association between valproate use by men around conception and an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in their children. These patients were targeted for the intervention to ensure compliance with the MHRA guidance on family planning risks. The first intervention involved sending an Accurx text message to all 22 patients. outlining the potential risks associated with valproate use around conception, need for effective contraception for both partners, and encouraged patients to contact the practice if…
