TL;DR
This study finds that menstrual irregularities are common in female psychiatric patients, especially those on certain medications, and are linked to poor treatment adherence.
Contribution
The study provides new insights into the prevalence and impact of menstrual irregularities in psychiatric patients in the Indian context.
Findings
37% of female psychiatric inpatients experienced menstrual irregularities.
Patients on typical antipsychotics had a higher prevalence of menstrual irregularities (80.7%) compared to those on atypical antipsychotics (27.7%).
Poor treatment adherence was associated with higher menstrual distress scores.
