TL;DR
This study examines how geographic remoteness and income levels affect emergency preparedness in South Dakota schools.
Contribution
The study identifies socioeconomic and geographic factors influencing athletic emergency preparedness in secondary schools.
Findings
Schools in low-income areas with limited access to athletic trainers are less likely to have written emergency action plans.
Over 20% of schools are more than 20 miles from the nearest hospital, affecting emergency response capabilities.
Low-income schools are less likely to have heat illness guidelines and environmental monitoring practices.

Context: Athletic emergency preparedness remains critical to ensure athlete safety. Objective: To assess the influence of geographic remoteness, socioeconomic status, and healthcare access on athletic emergency preparedness of South Dakota secondary schools.
