A qualitative exploration into the experience of mindfulness in moderate-severe persistent depression
Timothy Sweeney, Elena Nixon, Richard Morriss, Patrick Callaghan

TL;DR
This study explores how mindfulness changes in people with moderate-to-severe persistent depression, revealing how depression affects their ability to be mindful.
Contribution
The study is the first to examine the relationship between mindfulness and depression in individuals new to mindfulness training.
Findings
Mindfulness decreases in the context of moderate-to-severe depression due to depression-related processes like rumination.
Reduced mindfulness appears to maintain and intensify the depressive experience.
Introducing mindfulness to this population may be challenging due to intense symptoms obstructing a mindful perspective.
