TL;DR
This study analyzed vitiligo patterns in Japan using claims data, finding consistent prevalence, high comorbidity rates, and changing treatment trends over 13 years.
Contribution
The study provides the first comprehensive analysis of vitiligo clinical patterns in Japan using a national claims database.
Findings
Vitiligo prevalence in Japan remained stable at around 0.05% between 2010 and 2022.
Atopic dermatitis was the most common comorbidity, with increasing prevalence among children aged 5–9 years.
Topical corticosteroid use decreased while narrowband ultraviolet B procedures increased over the study period.
Abstract
Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disorder that profoundly impacts patients' quality of life. Real‐world data on vitiligo in Japan are limited. Of 16 947 087 patients in the database during the 13‐year analysis period, a total of 26 358 patients (0.16%, 95% confidence interval 0.15–0.16) had a diagnosis of vitiligo. The standardized prevalence of vitiligo by sex and age in Japan remained generally consistent between 2010 (0.051%) and 2022 (0.056%). Atopic dermatitis was the most prevalent…
