## TL;DR

This study compares zirconia and titanium abutments and finds that zirconia performs better in preserving soft tissue and bone around dental implants.

## Contribution

The study provides new clinical evidence on the superior performance of zirconia abutments over titanium in peri-implant tissue health.

## Key findings

- Zirconia abutments showed better soft tissue health and less inflammation.
- Zirconia abutments preserved marginal bone levels more effectively than titanium.
- Clinical improvements were observed at 3 and 6 months post-implantation.

## Abstract

The comparative effect of zirconia and titanium abutments on peri-implant hard and soft tissues is of interest to dentists. Hence, a
total of 40 patients with single-tooth implants in the posterior region were selected and divided into two groups: zirconia abutments
(Group A, n=20) and titanium abutments (Group B, n=20). Clinical parameters, including probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP) and
peri-implant marginal bone level (MBL), were evaluated at baseline, 3 months and 6 months post-implant placement. Radiographic analysis
was used to measure changes in marginal bone levels. Zirconia abutments showed a more favourable outcome on peri-implant soft tissue
health and marginal bone preservation than titanium abutments. Zirconia abutments further show reduced inflammation and bone resorption
around dental implants.
