958 Pneumonia as a Secondary Complication to Inhalation Injury and Its Impact on Hospital Course
Ryan Johnson, Abigail Plum, John Kubasiak, Manuel Portalatin

TL;DR
This study shows that pneumonia complicating inhalation injuries in burn patients leads to longer hospital stays and more intensive care, despite lower mortality risk.
Contribution
The study quantifies how pneumonia affects hospital outcomes in inhalation injury patients using a large national database.
Findings
Pneumonia was associated with 8.82 more days on a ventilator and 7.33 more ICU days.
Patients with pneumonia had 64% lower odds of mortality compared to those without.
Pneumonia significantly increased overall hospital length of stay by 7.85 days.
Abstract
Inhalation injury greatly contributes to the morbidity and mortality of burn patients. With limited treatment options for inhalation injury, burn patients are at an increased risk of developing secondary respiratory complications, such as pneumonia (PNA). The impact of secondary respiratory complications on the course of stay for burn patients with inhalation injury remains poorly described. This study aims to assess the association between PNA, developed in the setting of inhalation injury, and hospital outcomes. The study utilized the American Burn Association Burn Care Quality Platform (BCQP), consisting of patients ≥18 years of age who were hospitalized for a burn injury between 2013-2022. Inclusion criteria included patients who were reported to have an inhalation injury. Patients were excluded if their mortality outcome was unknown. Pneumonia was queried as any of the ICD-10…
