Nicole Oakman, Kim Le, Joan Reisch, Jennifer B Walsh

TL;DR
This study examines how the representation of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in internal medicine-pediatrics and related specialties has changed from 2005 to 2020.
Contribution
The study provides new insights into trends of underrepresented minorities in med-peds residencies compared to related fields and the general US population.
Findings
There was a significant increase in underrepresented minority (URiM) residents in med-peds, FM, IM, and pediatrics from 2005 to 2020.
Hispanic representation in med-peds increased significantly, while African American representation decreased slightly.
URiM representation in med-peds remained below that of related specialties and the US population.

Methods Self-reported race and ethnicity data was obtained from annual graduate medical education census reports and the US Census Bureau. A cross-sectional analysis of African American/Black (AA), American Indian/Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander,…
