Shervin Assari, Amanda Sonnega, Hossein Zare

TL;DR
Higher education usually reduces welfare reliance, but American Indian/Alaska Native people experience weaker benefits compared to White people, suggesting structural barriers.
Contribution
This study provides empirical evidence supporting the Minorities’ Diminished Returns theory in the context of welfare receipt among AIAN populations.
Findings
Higher educational attainment is associated with lower odds of welfare receipt for both AIAN and White adults.
The protective effect of a college degree is significantly weaker for AIAN adults compared to White adults.
AIAN adults remain at higher risk of welfare reliance despite higher education levels.
