TL;DR
This study explores why Danish adults with ADHD choose to continue or stop their medication, finding that perceptions of ADHD as biological or socially constructed play a key role.
Contribution
The study introduces patient-reported insights into ADHD medication adherence, emphasizing the role of illness perception and medication effects.
Findings
Patients who continued medication viewed ADHD as a biological illness, while those who discontinued saw it as a social construct.
Continuing patients reported more positive medication effects, whereas discontinuing patients reported more negative effects.
Continuing patients were more likely to take medication for work and social reasons compared to those who discontinued.
