M. Spirova

TL;DR
This study compares non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatments for behavioral and psychological symptoms in Alzheimer’s patients, emphasizing the need for non-drug approaches and staff education.
Contribution
Highlights the high prevalence of BPSD in Alzheimer’s patients and advocates for non-pharmacological interventions over polypharmacy.
Findings
82% of Alzheimer’s patients exhibited BPSD requiring additional therapy.
Non-pharmacological approaches and cognitive stimulation are more beneficial than pharmacological treatments for moderate dementia.
Education of caregivers and establishment of day care centers are recommended to delay institutionalization.
Abstract
BPSDs in patients with AD are present up to 90% and can cause serious complications in their overall health. A non-pharmacological approach and cognitive enhancers should be a priority in treatment in order to reduce the use of antipsychotics. In the pharmacological treatment of bpsd, additional therapy is inevitable in many cases the need for adequat educatation of the medical staff in a geriatric center for the nonfarmacological approach in patients with bpsd in AD.
