Prescription practices for antipsychotic medication in an acute inpatient ward: Risks / benefits discussions with patients and performance of baseline investigations as per NICE guidelines
M. Elesawy, G. J. Munday, N. Lekka

TL;DR
This study found that discussions about antipsychotic risks and benefits and baseline health checks were often missing in a psychiatric ward, despite guidelines.
Contribution
The study evaluates real-world adherence to NICE guidelines for antipsychotic initiation in an acute psychiatric setting.
Findings
Only 40% of patients had discussions about antipsychotic side effects, and 26.7% had no documentation of risk/benefit discussions.
Baseline metabolic tests were incomplete, with 26.7% of patients declining blood tests.
ECGs were universally offered, but 33.3% of patients declined them.

Data from electronic patient records included demographics, Mental Health Act (MHA) status, psychiatric diagnoses, medical co-morbidities, documentation of medication benefits / side effects discussions with patients, medication information provision, as well as baseline investigations involving…
