Rohail Razzaq, Muhammad Hamza Khan, Seema Shaheen, Najeeb Ullah

TL;DR
This clinical audit at a hospital in Pakistan found that implementing training and checklists improved kidney protection practices for elderly patients undergoing CT scans.
Contribution
The study demonstrates how targeted interventions can improve adherence to renal protection protocols in elderly patients receiving contrast CT scans.
Findings
Initial audit showed poor hydration and post-scan kidney function testing in elderly patients.
After staff training and checklists, full compliance with protocols was achieved by the third audit cycle.
The audit plans to expand to another hospital to sustain and improve patient care.
Abstract
Introduction Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a serious risk involved in computed tomography (CT) scans, particularly for older people. The main idea of this clinical audit was to assess current practices regarding renal function tests (RFTs) and hydration status before and after contrast CT scans in older patients at District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ), Dera Ismail Khan, Pakistan, and to implement recommendations for improvement. CIN is a form of acute kidney injury that occurs after the administration of contrast dye used in imaging procedures and is characterized by a sudden deterioration in renal functions. Methods This clinical audit checked adherence to renal protection protocols in elderly patients undergoing contrast CT scans. Conducted over three cycles from July 5 to August 15, 2022, this clinical audit included 30 patients aged 75 and above. Each cycle had 10…
