TL;DR
This study examines if drugs rated as 'not acceptable' by Prescrire International were approved by Health Canada, finding that most were approved despite their low therapeutic value.
Contribution
The study reveals a discrepancy between Prescrire's evaluations and Health Canada's approvals of drug-indications.
Findings
Seventy 'not acceptable' drug-indications were approved in Canada, including 42 new drugs and 28 new indications.
Most new drugs evaluated by the PMPRB were rated as having slight or no therapeutic improvement.
Health Canada approved these drugs despite Prescrire's negative ratings, suggesting potential regulatory differences.
