TL;DR
This study examines how ophthalmology residency programs use diversity statements and finds that program-specific efforts to address underrepresentation are limited.
Contribution
The paper provides new insights into the role of diversity statements in ophthalmology residency programs and their limited impact on addressing underrepresentation.
Findings
Only 16.7% of ophthalmology residency programs have program-specific diversity statements.
Higher-ranked programs are more likely to mention sexual orientation and disability in their diversity statements.
Public institutions are more likely to include specific diversity categories in their institutional-level statements.
