Abstract
Consumption of high-sugar diets exacerbates inflammation and hinders the healing process in animal models of acute colitis. Canagliflozin (CANA) is a sodium glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor primarily used for the management of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. CANA has demonstrated the ability to suppress human T cell and macrophage effector function and to improve inflammation in rat colitis models. Based on these findings, we hypothesized that CANA would mitigate the deleterious effects of a high sugar diet in a DSS colitis model through its effects on immune effector cells. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a high sugar diet and CANA administration on colonic inflammation in an animal model of acute colitis.
