TL;DR
This paper constructs and analyzes specific pseudo-isotopies for barbell diffeomorphisms in high-dimensional manifolds, providing explicit formulas and classification results based on Hatcher-Wagoner invariants.
Contribution
It introduces standard barbell pseudo-isotopies with computable invariants and classifies pseudo-isotopies with vanishing invariants in high dimensions.
Findings
Explicit formulas for certain barbell pseudo-isotopies.
Classification of pseudo-isotopies with vanishing invariants in dimension ≥6.
Construction of immersed barbell pseudo-isotopies with prescribed invariants in dimension 4.
Abstract
For a half-unknotted implanted -barbell in , we construct two specific pseudo-isotopies, which we denote by standard barbell pseudo-isotopies, both resulting in that barbell diffeomorphism, each having a Cerf diagram only containing a single eye and with easily computable Hatcher-Wagoner invariants. We give an explicit formula for and a special class of . Using this we show that for , every pseudo-isotopy with vanishing first Hatcher-Wagoner invariant can be isotoped to a composition of standard barbell pseudo-isotopies with or . In dimension , we further generalize the constructions and computations to half-unknotted immersed barbell diffeomorphisms and prove that for every with , there exists a standard…
