TL;DR
This study uses VLA Sky Survey data to identify and classify fast, luminous extragalactic radio transients, providing new constraints on their occurrence rates and implications for related high-energy astrophysical phenomena.
Contribution
First systematic radio survey-based constraints on rates of various fast transients, including accretion-induced collapse, fast blue optical transients, and gamma-ray burst afterglows.
Findings
Discovered five fast luminous transients in the nearby universe.
Set upper limits on the rates of accretion-induced collapse and related phenomena.
Estimated rare occurrence rates for fast blue optical transients and gamma-ray bursts.
Abstract
Radio wavelengths offer a unique window into high-energy astrophysical phenomena that may be obscured or too rapidly evolving to be captured at other wavelengths. Leveraging data from the Very Large Array Sky Survey, we perform a systematic search for fast, luminous transients with characteristic timescales years in the nearby universe (). We report the discovery of five such transients, and classify them based on their synchrotron emission energetics and host galaxy properties. From this sample, we derive observational constraints on the volumetric rates of certain corresponding transient classes. We limit the rates of accretion-induced collapse of white dwarfs with dense circumstellar medium interaction (and those producing pulsar wind nebulae) at % (%) of the local Type Ia supernova rate,…
