Exploring the link between galaxy assembly and dark matter halo assembly in IllustrisTNG: Insights from the Mutual Information
Y.D. Camargo, R. A. Casas-Miranda

TL;DR
This study uses Mutual Information analysis on IllustrisTNG simulations to explore how galaxy properties relate to dark matter halo assembly, revealing that galaxy formation efficiency is a key indicator of halo growth history.
Contribution
It introduces a novel application of Mutual Information to quantify the relationship between galaxy and halo assembly, highlighting the significance of galaxy formation efficiency as a tracer.
Findings
Galaxy formation efficiency strongly correlates with halo assembly time for low-mass centrals.
Weak correlations found between galaxy properties like sSFR, color, and halo assembly time.
Satellite galaxy properties show negligible correlation with halo assembly, emphasizing environmental effects.
Abstract
We employed Mutual Information (MI) analysis to investigate the relationship between galaxy properties and the assembly history of their host dark matter (DM) haloes from the IllustrisTNG simulations. Focusing on central and satellite galaxies with stellar masses between , we examined the correlation between halo assembly time and galaxy assembly time, specific star formation rate (sSFR), color , and galaxy formation efficiency . Our results indicate a strong correlation between and the halo assembly time for low-mass central galaxies, suggesting a co-evolutionary relationship. In contrast, sSFR and color exhibit weaker correlations with halo assembly time, indicating that additional factors should influence these galaxy properties. Satellite galaxies show negligible correlation between their properties and…
