Maximilien F. Debbas, Takehito Suzuki, Joseph G. Checkelsky

TL;DR
This study synthesizes and characterizes single crystals of $R_3Ni_{30}B_{10}$ ($R=La, Ce$), revealing anomalous low-temperature heat capacity features in the Ce compound linked to possible multipolar or partial order phenomena.
Contribution
It provides detailed structural and physical property data for $R_3Ni_{30}B_{10}$, highlighting the anomalous heat capacity features in Ce-based samples and discussing their potential origins.
Findings
Ce system shows mixed-valence states.
Heat capacity peaks at 6 K and 2 K in Ce compound.
No corresponding features in resistivity or magnetization.
Abstract
We report the synthesis of single crystals of the system which realizes the tetragonal (No. 129) space group. We performed single crystal, transmission X-ray diffraction measurements to determine the crystal structure. Additionally, we characterized the samples through magnetization, resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. The system exhibits mixed-valence states and we observe maxima in the heat capacity at and (both absent for ) with no corresponding features in the resistivity or magnetization. We discuss the potential roles of multipolar and short-ranged/partial order in connection to the anomalous order.
