TL;DR
This study develops free-free emission templates from H$41 extalpha$ lines to analyze ionized gas in massive protoclusters, revealing evolutionary trends and physical properties of HII regions with implications for star formation processes.
Contribution
It introduces a novel method to create free-free emission templates using H$41 extalpha$ lines, enabling detailed analysis of ionized gas in protoclusters.
Findings
Ionized gas properties follow evolutionary trends with increasing OB stars.
Size of HII regions correlates strongly with ionizing photon rate $Q_0$.
No evidence of maser amplification of H$41 extalpha$ line was found.
Abstract
We use the H recombination line to create templates of the millimeter free-free emission in the ALMA-IMF continuum maps, which allows to separate it from dust emission. This method complements spectral-index information and extrapolation from centimeter wavelength maps. We use the derived maps to estimate the properties of up to 34 HII regions across the ALMA-IMF protoclusters. The hydrogen ionizing-photon rate and spectral types follow the evolutionary trend proposed by Motte et al. The youngest protoclusters lack detectable ionized gas, followed by protoclusters with increasing numbers of OB stars. The total increases from s to s. We used the adjacent He line to measure the relative number abundances of helium, finding values consistent with the Galactic interstellar medium, although a few outliers are discussed.…
