Shou-shan Bao, Wenhai Gao, Hong Zhang, Jian Zhou

TL;DR
This paper proposes a method to constrain axion-gluon coupling using mono-hadron signatures in ultra-peripheral collisions at the LHC, providing competitive limits with existing mono-jet analyses.
Contribution
It introduces a novel approach to constrain axion-gluon coupling via exclusive mono-hadron production in high-energy collisions.
Findings
Established limits on axion-gluon coupling comparable to mono-jet constraints.
Identified main background as $ ho^0+\pi^0$ process with undetected photons.
Demonstrated feasibility of using mono-hadron signatures for axion searches.
Abstract
The axion-gluon coupling can be constrained directly through hard exclusive processes at the LHC. Specifically, we study the associated production of a long-lived axion with a meson in ultra-peripheral collisions and in collisions. With the axion escaped from the detector, the final state is characterized by a mono-hadron signature. The main background in our analysis originates from the process, where the photons from the decay are undetected due to limited detector performance. Our analysis yields an exclusion limit of the axion-gluon coupling that is comparable to the limit obtained from the mono-jet process at the LHC.
