TL;DR
This study uses MeerKAT radio observations to uncover hidden gas-rich galaxies in the obscured Vela Supercluster region, revealing new structures and demonstrating the survey's effectiveness in the Zone of Avoidance.
Contribution
First deep HI survey of the Vela region with MeerKAT, unveiling numerous previously undetected galaxies and structures in the obscured Zone of Avoidance.
Findings
Discovered 471 HI galaxy candidates in the Vela region.
Identified two wall-like overdensities confirming previous hypotheses.
Detected a new narrow filament at ~12000 km/s.
Abstract
We conducted a search for HI emission of the gas-rich galaxies in the Vela region () to explore the Vela Supercluster (VSCL) at km s, largely obscured by Galactic dust. Within the mostly RFI-free band ( km s) of MeerKAT, the analysis focuses on hexagonally distributed pointings extracted from the SARAO MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey located in the Vela region (VelaSMGPS). These were combined into 10 contiguous mosaics, covering a deg area. Among the HI detected sources, 39 were previously discovered in the Parkes HIZOA survey ( km s; rms mJy beam). With the improved rms level of the VelaSMGPS, i.e., mJy beam, our study unveils nearly 12 times…
