TL;DR
This study confirms a galaxy protocluster at z=3.699 through spectroscopy, revealing diverse galaxy populations and early cluster formation signs, with properties influenced more by local neighbors than the cluster center.
Contribution
First spectroscopic confirmation of a protocluster at z=3.699, analyzing its galaxy properties and spatial distribution to understand early cluster formation.
Findings
Protocluster confirmed at z=3.699 with 13 member galaxies.
UV-bright galaxies, including an AGN, are overabundant in the protocluster.
Galaxy properties correlate more with local neighbors than with distance from the cluster center.
Abstract
We present follow-up spectroscopy on a protocluster candidate selected from the wide-field imaging of the Hyper SuprimeCam Subaru Strategic Programme. The target protocluster candidate was identified as a overdense region of -dropout galaxies, and the redshifts of -dropout galaxies are determined by detecting their Ly emission. Thirteen galaxies, at least, are found to be clustering in the narrow redshift range of at . This is clear evidence of the presence of a protocluster in the target region. Following the discovery of the protocluster at , the physical properties and three-dimensional distribution of its member galaxies are investigated. Based on spectroscopically-confirmed -dropout galaxies, we find an overabundance of rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) bright galaxies in the protocluster. The UV brightest protocluster member…
