TL;DR
This paper develops and evaluates psychologically inspired strategies to effectively counteract implied stereotypes in hate speech, emphasizing the importance of addressing underlying biases for more convincing counterspeech.
Contribution
It introduces six new strategies based on psychology to challenge stereotypes in counterspeech and compares their use in human and machine-generated responses.
Findings
Humans use more specific, stereotype-targeted strategies.
Machines tend to use less specific, denouncing strategies.
Humans find stereotype-specific strategies more convincing.
