Charm production and fragmentation fractions at midrapidity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV
ALICE Collaboration

TL;DR
This paper reports precise measurements of charm hadron production in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV, providing new insights into charm quark fragmentation, cross sections, and gluon PDFs at very low Bjorken-x.
Contribution
It presents the first measurements of certain charm baryon fragmentation fractions and improves the understanding of charm production and hadronization at LHC energies.
Findings
Charm baryon fragmentation fractions are larger than in e+e- and ep collisions.
The charm production cross section aligns with upper bounds of pQCD calculations.
New data constrains gluon PDFs at very low Bjorken-x.
Abstract
Measurements of the production cross sections of prompt , , , , , and charm hadrons at midrapidity in protonproton collisions at TeV with the ALICE detector are presented. The D-meson cross sections as a function of transverse momentum () are provided with improved precision and granularity. The ratios of -differential meson production cross sections based on this publication and on measurements at different rapidity and collision energy provide a constraint on gluon parton distribution functions at low values of Bjorken- (). The measurements of () baryon production extend the measured intervals down to ~GeV. These measurements are used to determine the…
