Do you know "saudade"? The importance of a cultural and language-based emotion approach for HCI
Diogo Cortiz, Paulo Boggio

TL;DR
This paper emphasizes the importance of integrating cultural and language considerations into emotion-aware human-computer interaction design, especially in affective computing, to better accommodate diverse emotional expressions.
Contribution
It highlights the need to incorporate cultural and linguistic factors into emotion recognition and HCI design, addressing a gap in current globalized technology development.
Findings
Cultural and language differences significantly impact emotion recognition accuracy.
Incorporating cultural context improves user experience in emotion-aware interfaces.
Designing with cultural sensitivity enhances the effectiveness of affective computing.
Abstract
Today most technologies and interfaces are designed to be global. We argue that if emotional aspects are incorporated during the design phase of technologies and interfaces - or in technologies for recognizing users' emotions such as affective computing - culture and language should be taken as relevant criteria.
