Performance Metrics for Communication Systems with Forward Error Correction
Laurent Schmalen

TL;DR
This paper reviews and discusses performance metrics for optical communication systems employing forward error correction, emphasizing universality, thresholds, and practical integration into experiments.
Contribution
It introduces a comprehensive discussion on performance metrics, universality, and practical methods for including FEC in optical communication experiments.
Findings
Highlights the concept of universality in performance metrics.
Discusses common performance thresholds used in the field.
Demonstrates how to incorporate FEC into transmission experiments.
Abstract
We revisit performance metrics for optical communication systems with FEC. We illustrate the concept of universality and discuss the most widespread performance thresholds. Finally, we show by example how to include FEC into transmission experiments.
