TL;DR
This study analyzes dust properties and star formation in 14 galaxies at redshift 7 using ALMA data, revealing high obscured star formation, diverse dust temperatures, and compact dust distributions, with implications for early galaxy evolution.
Contribution
It introduces a detailed FIR dust continuum analysis of z~7 galaxies, considering various dust geometries and extinction curves, and highlights the diversity in dust content and star formation properties.
Findings
28-90.5% of star formation is obscured by dust.
Total SFR ranges from 31.5 to 129.5 M_sun/yr.
Dust masses are around 1.3e7 M_sun with temperatures near 52 K.
Abstract
We analyse FIR dust continuum measurements for 14 galaxies () in the ALMA REBELS LP to derive their physical properties. Our model uses three input data: (a) the UV spectral slope, , (b) the observed UV continuum flux at A, , (c) the observed continuum flux at m, , and considers Milky Way (MW) and SMC extinction curves, along with different dust geometries. We find that REBELS galaxies have (28-90.5)% of their star formation obscured; the total (UV+IR) star formation rates are in the range . The sample-averaged dust mass and temperature are and K, respectively. In some galaxies dust is abundant (REBELS-14, ), or hot (REBELS-18, K). The dust distribution is compact ( kpc…
