TL;DR
This paper reviews the design of four-dimensional modulation formats for optical fiber communication, focusing on maximizing information transfer and comparing their transmission reach, including optimization for nonlinear tolerance.
Contribution
It introduces a model-based optimization approach for designing nonlinear-tolerant 4D modulation formats and compares their performance with existing formats.
Findings
Maximized generalized mutual information for 4D formats.
Compared maximum transmission reach of recent 4D formats.
Discussed optimization for nonlinear tolerance in 4D modulations.
Abstract
We review the design of multidimensional modulations by maximizing generalized mutual information and compare the maximum transmission reach of recently introduced 4D formats. A model-based optimization for nonlinear-tolerant 4D modulations is also discussed.
