TL;DR
This paper reviews Feza Gürsey's contributions to symmetries and group theory, and explores how these mathematical structures offer new insights into fluid dynamics and phenomena like the chiral magnetic effect.
Contribution
It introduces a novel perspective on fluid dynamics through the lens of group theory, inspired by Gürsey's work on symmetries and division algebras.
Findings
Group theory provides new insights into fluid dynamics.
Connections between symmetries and the chiral magnetic effect.
Enhanced understanding of mathematical structures in physics.
Abstract
Feza G\"ursey was a brilliant physicist who loved symmetries and beautiful mathematical structures such as group theory and division algebras. In this centenary year, I give a brief review of some of his contributions and then zero-in on group theory and discuss how it can give us a new perspective on a centuries-old topic, namely, fluid dynamics, including new facets such as the chiral magnetic effect. \vskip .1in \noindent This is a slightly edited and enhanced version of a colloquium at the Middle East Technical University on December 9, 2021, which was organized in celebration of the centenary of Feza G\"ursey.
