TL;DR
This study investigates the valence state of Ce and magnetic ordering in Pr in single crystals of Ce2Re3Si5 and Pr2Re3Si5, revealing intermediate valence in Ce and Ising-type antiferromagnetic order in Pr.
Contribution
The paper provides comprehensive physical property measurements and crystal electric field analysis, revealing valence fluctuation in Ce and Ising-type magnetic order in Pr within these compounds.
Findings
Ce ions are in an intermediate valence state in Ce2Re3Si5.
Pr2Re3Si5 exhibits magnetic ordering at 9 K.
Pr3+ ground state splits into nine singlets with 1179 K splitting.
Abstract
Single crystals of and have been grown by Czochralski method in a tetra-arc furnace. Powder x-ray diffraction confirmed that these compounds crystallize in the -type tetragonal crystal structure with space group (No. 128). The anisotropic physical properties have been studied comprehensively by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, electrical transport and specific heat. The low value of magnetic susceptibility together with no magnetic transition down to ~K gives evidence that the Ce-ions are in the intermediate valence state in . On the other hand revealed a magnetic ordering at ~K. The sharp drop in the magnetic susceptibility and a spin flip like metamagnetic transition, for in the magnetization plot of ${\rm…
