TL;DR
This paper demonstrates that Penrose limits taken along null geodesics on a specific class of 3-surfaces in 4D space-times result in diagonalisable plane-wave spacetimes, providing insight into their geometric structure.
Contribution
It establishes that Penrose limits along null geodesics on umbilic 3-surfaces in 4D space-times produce diagonalisable plane-wave geometries, extending previous understanding.
Findings
Penrose limits along null geodesics on umbilic 3-surfaces are diagonalisable.
The result applies to time-like umbilic 3-surfaces in 4D space-times.
Provides a geometric condition for diagonalisability of plane-wave limits.
Abstract
As a footnote to arXiv:1909.07756, I show that, given a (time-like) umbilic 3-surface in a 4-dimensional space-time , the Penrose limit taken along any null geodesic which lies in is a diagonalisable plane-wave.
