ALICE Collaboration

TL;DR
This paper measures prompt and non-prompt J/ψ production cross sections at midrapidity in proton-proton collisions at 5.02 and 13 TeV, providing insights into heavy quark production and testing QCD predictions.
Contribution
It presents the first detailed measurement of prompt and non-prompt J/ψ cross sections at these energies, including the b-bbar pair production cross sections extrapolated from differential data.
Findings
Total b-bbar cross section at 13 TeV: 541 μb
Total b-bbar cross section at 5.02 TeV: 218 μb
Results agree with QCD-based theoretical models
Abstract
The production of J/ is measured at midrapidity () in proton-proton collisions at = 5.02 and 13 TeV, through the dielectron decay channel, using the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data sets used for the analyses correspond to integrated luminosities of = 19.4 0.4 nb and = 32.2 0.5 nb at = 5.02 and 13 TeV, respectively. The fraction of non-prompt J/ mesons, i.e. those originating from the decay of beauty hadrons, is measured down to a transverse momentum = 2 GeV/ (1 GeV/) at = 5.02 TeV (13 TeV). The and rapidity () differential cross sections, as well as the corresponding values integrated over and , are carried out separately for prompt and non-prompt J/ mesons. The results are compared…
